Jecoby Carter
Senior Specialist, Content & Editorial, Integrated Storytelling at VMware

Knotch connected with Jecoby Carter, Senior Specialist, Content & Editorial, Integrated Storytelling at VMware for our "Own Your Voice" series to hear his story, and to learn what drives Jecoby in his career.

Where did your story begin?

My journey began in college. I always knew I wanted to create - but I wasn't exactly sure where that would land me. As I thought of my future, my mom encouraged me to look into digital media. After researching future career possibilities, I was sold - I knew that I wanted to create content for mass consumption.

What was a pivotal life moment where your story changed?

Life to me is like a really good book - you're emotionally attached, and you never really know what's going to happen. After working for the state government for four and a half years, I was ready for a change. I wanted a career that not only challenged me as a creator but also had a global impact. I was yearning for something more meaningful. A friend knew I was actively seeking a change and suggested VMware. After my first interview, I knew it was the start of my next chapter.

Who made the biggest impact on your story?

I think my mom has had the greatest impact on my story. Seeing her never cease her education, and always aiming to learn and grow in her career, has instilled those same values in me. But there have been so many different people that have contributed to my story. My current director consistently champions change in our organization and is always looking for opportunities to grow me and my peers.

What’s an unpopular opinion you have about content?

The best content is ORGANIC. There are so many paid partnerships and influencers in today's landscape, but a lot of times, the content that performs the best is genuine human content. One person simply sharing something with another in the purest form.

If you could define your story using one sentence, what would that sentence be?

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle." - Steve Jobs
